Double Glazed Glass Options

Elevate comfort, cut energy costs, and reduce noise with high‑spec double‑glazed glass designed for Australian conditions. All options below are supplied ready for DIY/Builder installation, aligned to AU/NZ Standards, and compatible with our thermally broken aluminium frames for maximum performance.

What is double‑glazed glass?

A double‑glazed unit (IGU) is two panes of glass separated by a sealed spacer to form an insulating airspace, typically filled with argon for improved thermal performance for cooler summers & warmer winters. This design:
Reduces heat transfer
Minimises condensation on interior panes
Cuts outdoor noise
Frosted double‑glazed office window providing privacy

Low-E Double‑Glazed Glass

Low‑E (low emissivity) glass features a microscopically thin coating that reflects heat while allowing visible light to pass. It improves insulation in winter and reduces solar heat gain in summer.
Key Benefits:
  • Superior thermal performance (lower U‑values)

  • Reduced summer heat gain (lower SHGC options available)

  • Minimises cold‑pane radiation and winter condensation

  • Supports 6‑Star energy design goals

Supply only. Designed for DIY/Builder installation.
Example stacks: 5–12A–5 Low‑E • 5–6A–5 • laminated options (6.38–10.76 mm)
Compliance: AS/NZS 2208 alignment; safety glass notes for wet areas
Best for:
  • Most climates and orientations

  • Homes targeting maximum energy efficiency

  • Pairing with thermally broken aluminium frames for best results

Typical options:
  • Clear Low‑E vs. solar control Low‑E (for west/north exposures)

  • Argon fill and warm‑edge spacer as standard

  • Safety glass per AS 1288 and AS/NZS 2208 where required

Tinted Double Glazed Glass

Tinted glass adds built‑in solar control by absorbing a portion of solar energy, reducing glare and visible light transmission.
Key Benefits:
  • Lower solar heat gain in peak summer

  • Glare reduction for improved visual comfort

  • UV mitigation to help protect furnishings

Supply only. Designed for DIY/Builder installation.
Specification: PDLC switchable laminate; clear/opaque states; low‑voltage transformer; remote control included; optional wall switch/smart relay
Best for:
  • West‑facing elevations and rooms with harsh afternoon sun

  • Coastal and northern climates where summer heat is the main issue

  • Design aesthetics: grey/bronze/green tints to match façade

Typical options:
  • Tints reduce visible light slightly; select shade to balance daylight and cooling needs

  • Can be combined with Low‑E for better thermal performance than tint alone

Opaque (Frosted/Obscure) Double Glazed Glass

Opaque privacy glass diffuses light while obscuring views. Available in acid‑etched (frosted), ceramic‑frit, laminated interlayers, or patterned options.
Key Benefits:
  • Daytime privacy with soft, even daylight

  • Hides cluttered outlooks while maintaining brightness

  • Excellent for bathrooms, street‑facing spaces, and boundary windows

Supply only. Designed for DIY/Builder installation.
Compliance: AS/NZS 2208 alignment; safety glass notes for wet areas
Best for:
  • Wet areas, stairwells, and side setbacks

  • Designers seeking a consistent privacy aesthetic without blinds

Typical options:
  • Frosted Low‑E IGUs for thermal performance plus privacy

  • Laminated obscure for added acoustic/safety requirements

  • Compliance to AS 1288 and AS/NZS 2208 where applicable

Dimmable (Switchable) Double Glazed Glass

Dimmable glass (also called smart or switchable privacy glass) changes from clear to opaque with a low‑voltage electrical signal. Ideal where instant privacy is needed without curtains or blinds.
Key Benefits:
  • Instant switch from open view to privacy

  • Clean, minimalist aesthetic; reduces dusting/maintenance of window dressings

  • Can double as projection or whiteboard surface when opaque (internal applications)

Supply only. Designed for DIY/Builder installation.
Specification: PDLC switchable laminate; clear/opaque states; low‑voltage transformer; remote control included; optional wall switch/smart relay
Best for:
  • Bathrooms, meeting rooms, street‑facing rooms

  • Architectural features and premium fit‑outs

  • Areas where privacy is needed only at certain times

Typical options:
  • Requires power and control wiring; plan early with your electrician

  • Available as IGU (double‑glazed) to maintain thermal and acoustic performance

  • Indoor/outdoor suitability and panel sizes subject to specification

I recently purchased a set of windows from Energy Smart Glazing,  who imports high-quality products, and I couldn’t be happier with the result! The craftsmanship is outstanding, solid frames, smooth operation, and excellent insulation. You can tell these windows are built to last. It’s refreshing to deal with someone local who cares about quality and customer satisfaction.

Highly recommend if you're looking for durable, stylish windows without the inflated price tag!

We ordered two double glazed windows and a double glazed french door from Energy Smart Glazing for the renovation of our kitchen. We wanted specific non-standard sizes and certain finishes as we are renovating an older home. Energy Smart Glazing were recommended to us by a friend of ours who recently sourced all windows for his new build through Robbie.

Robbie was very easy to deal with and provided lots of options and finishes for the windows. We got the products delivered to our home and installed the windows ourselves. It was relatively easy as we installed into timber frame and got the reveals on the windows. The windows/door are a bit heavier to install compared to installing the frame and getting a glazier in  but the quality and price more than makes up for it. The cost including shipping for all three products came back less than the quote for the local company to supply a single French door!

The windows look fantastic and we've noticed a significant reduction in outside noise and improved insulation. Even the plasterer was impressed with how quickly the area heated up and retained heat at the end of Winter. I  am going to order some new doors with security screens from them for my investment property.

Customer service was top-notch throughout the process, keeping us informed of any delays with shipping etc. -  highly recommend.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between Low‑E and standard double glazing?

Low‑E adds a special coating that reflects heat, improving winter insulation and reducing summer heat gain. It delivers better U‑values and can be tuned (via SHGC) for Australian orientations.

Can I combine tint and Low‑E?

Yes. A tinted outer pane can be paired with a Low‑E inner pane for glare control plus strong thermal performance, great for west‑facing façades.

Is opaque (privacy) glass still energy efficient?

Yes. Privacy finishes can be paired with Low‑E and argon‑filled cavities to maintain double‑glazed thermal performance.

Does dimmable glass work in IGUs?

Yes. Switchable interlayers can be built into double‑glazed units to preserve acoustic and thermal benefits. Confirm power/control requirements at design stage.

Do you meet Australian Standards?

We align specifications with AS 2047, AS 1288, and AS/NZS 2208, and provide documentation with your order.

Do you provide installation?
